PAULA CUMMINGS
Licensed Professional Counselor
(She/Her)
In-Person & Virtual
Paula sees clients off-site (no longer in the Hawthorne space) and runs her own private practice as an Affiliate of Hawthorne Healing Center.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Oregon. My approach is eclectic, drawing on a wide range of evidence-based modalities for children, families, and individuals. In recent years, I have completed certification as a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher, training in Embodied Awareness in Action (involving equines and nature in experiential counseling), and deepened my practice of meditative inquiry. Again and again, I find that the most powerful changes arise from connecting with one’s own deepest knowing.
Throughout my counseling career, I’ve had the privilege of working with many individuals and families. What I’ve noticed among those who become “unstuck” is the development of self-trust—learning to listen to their own embodied awareness and discovering what they truly believe and value. Often, we uncover long-held beliefs that were once helpful for survival but no longer serve us.
Before each session, I begin with mindfulness. I set the intention to create a safe, supportive space where I can listen with curiosity, compassion, and acceptance. I guide clients to tune into what is happening in their bodies and, from that embodied awareness, uncover the underlying beliefs that may be holding them back. Together, we explore their deepest truths while cultivating compassion and welcoming all feelings—both pleasant and difficult.
I often draw on an Internal Family Systems approach to help clients understand their inner experiences. My training in Embodied Awareness in Action incorporates my small herd of horses and the natural environment as experiential elements in the process. I especially value working with parents and children together with the horses, as it provides a practical and powerful way to experience attunement, boundaries, consent, empathy, and problem-solving.

My husband and I grew up on the east coast. We ventured out west and discovered the beauty and nature of Oregon. We fell in love with an old ranch-style home on 5 acres in the Rogue Valley in 1988. This property, like our own family, has expanded and grown more beautiful with time. After raising five children, now grown and many having families of their own, this property has continually been a safe haven and retreat to all the Cummings family and friends. We continue to see the property as an ever-expanding place of possibilities, hospitality,
and joy. Several years ago, we welcomed a small herd of mini horses to be part of my Equine Therapy practice. I see a smaller number of clients now, but with ever deepening respect for providing a safe space or self-discovery and transformation.
