Mindfulness & Somatic Therapy

The mind-body connection is incredibly powerful and our therapists at Hawthorne Healing Center acknowledge this by providing both mindfulness approaches and somatic therapy. As a holistic healing center, we hold space for the authentic transformation of your mind and body.

Mind-Body Connection & Mental Health

The mind-body connection refers to the ways in which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect our health. This concept is grounded in the understanding that our thoughts and emotions can manifest physically. On the flip side, physical pain and illness can have a negative impact on our mental health.

Trauma, depression, anxiety, and countless other distressing mental health issues have symptoms that manifest both mentally and physically. Stomach pain, headaches, sleep patterns, respiratory concerns, and weight loss/gain are just a few examples of physical symptoms associated with mental health disorders.

Mindfulness and somatic therapies have a foundation in holistic healing and tend to treat you as a whole person rather than a cluster of symptoms.

  • Mindfulness techniques are rooted in paying attention to the present without judgement. Techniques like deep breathing, sensory awareness, or visualization are helpful in reducing the body's response to mental stressors or symptoms of trauma.

  • Somatic therapy explores how your body experiences deeply painful experiences and applies mind-body healing techniques to reduce distress.

At the Hawthorne Healing Center, we are trained and experienced in using various mindfulness based techniques and somatic therapies like the Hakomi Method and Internal Family Systems Therapy.

Mindfulness & Somatic Therapy

What is the Hakomi Method?

The Hakomi Method offers a unique approach to psychotherapy that combines mindfulness, compassion, and somatic awareness to foster personal growth and healing.

Hakomi Therapy can help you explore your internal experience mindfully, by including your physical, emotional, mental and energetic realms. This method can offer the hurting and wounded parts of your psyche a much needed "missing experience" while honoring your boundaries and helping you to remain within your window of tolerance.

There are five principles that guide the Hakomi Method:

Mindfulness

Present minded attention that is non-judgemental.

Organicity

You possess the ability to heal and have an inner wisdom that guides the healing process.

Non-Violence

Therapy is meant to be collaborative and you may come in with defenses regarding your behavior or thoughts - they are treated with respect rather than a forceful attempt to change them.

Mind-Body Integration

The notion that mind, body, and spirit are interconnected and influence each other as well as a person’s beliefs

Unity

Humans exist as interdependent parts that come together to maintain the overall health of the system.

Our mind and body can want different things or hold different feelings at the same time - and this is normal. For example, during a heated argument you may want to apologize and just get away and another part of you wants to aggressively escalate the argument. This internal conflict might feel frustrating, but it’s actually a normal experience.

Our minds are made up of many parts, and understanding how they work together can help us navigate life with less stress on our mind and body. That’s where Internal Family Systems (IFS) comes in. IFS is a therapeutic approach that helps people explore and heal these different parts of themselves. We have trained and experienced therapists who utilize various parts-oriented methods, like IFS, with a great deal of success.
