Holistic Healing for Anxiety
Living life through the filter of anxiety can be unbearable. Daily routines can become unrecognizable and unmanageable. At Hawthorne Healing Center, we understand the pain and disruption that anxiety disorders can cause - and we understand the power in holistic therapy outside of medication.
Exploring Anxiety
We experience anxiety for a reason - it's our human evolutionary warning sign meant to keep us safe about potentially uncomfortable or mildly distressing situations. Trauma responses are much more potent - anxiety is a short-term response that resolves on its own typically.
Anxiety is typically experienced in the following ways:

Body
Heart racing
Shallow breathing
Sweaty
Sick to your stomach

Mind
Racing thoughts
Unable to follow conversations
Forgetful
Doom & Gloom mindset

Mood
Fearful
Stressed
Uncomfortable
Irritated
Anxiety becomes disordered, when it happens repeatedly in your daily routines - without a precipitating event and becomes disruptive to you socially, emotionally, and physically.
It's important to remember that a diagnosis doesn't define you. It merely helps therapists choose therapy modalities that will work best for you. Below are a few examples of anxiety disorders that we treat at Hawthorne Healing Center.
-
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
-
Panic Disorder
-
Phobias
-
Social Anxiety Disorder

Depression is a common co-occurring disorder alongside anxiety so it's important that your therapist knows your mental health history. Anxiety is thought to be highly genetic and can be traced to certain life stressors and changes. Anxiety has a huge impact on how you relate to the world and those around you. You may find yourself isolating more and more, losing sleep, having frequent headaches or severe stomach aches, and in general, you might just feel more erratic.
Anxiety Disorders
Holistic therapy for anxiety is an option outside of medicine to help calm your nervous system, improve emotional regulation, and create long-lasting relief. By fostering greater self-awareness about how anxiety disrupts your mind-body connection - you can identify early warning signs of anxiety and reduce the impact through various techniques explored below.
Holistic Therapy & Medication for Anxiety

Mindfulness
Through various mindfulness based stress reduction techniques, you can learn how to identify your pre-anxiety sensations and thoughts, focus on regulating your breath and staying calm, and finding things in your space to ground you (texture, sound, etc.)

Somatic Therapy
Learning to listen to your body and engage with the sensations as they come - can be empowering. Somatic therapy is a modality that helps you focus on your internal and external anxiety responses and learn to reduce their impact through various relaxation and mindfulness techniques.
A whole health approach means that you can add on other treatments known to help manage symptoms of anxiety including yoga, tai chi, nutritional supplements, crafting, hiking or other outdoor activities that offer natural stress relief.
Medication can be a part of a balanced approach to treating your anxiety. We don't have a prescriber in-house, but we work collaboratively with professionals that can prescribe in the community and can refer you to one of our partners, if medication is a logical next step. We understand the complexities of anxiety and know that there are psychotropic medications that are suitable for people as they heal.
Taking the first step on a path to healing is daunting, but we are here to help guide you. No one should have to face these struggles alone, and with holistic therapy approaches for managing anxiety, you won’t have to.
